Central Oklahoma
Bike to Work Day 2007
(May 18, 2007)

Online Survey

The Association of Central Oklahoma Governments (ACOG) is asking citizens to participate in a survey focused on bicycling. The survey is intended to help determine characteristics of the metro's bicycling community, and give direction to cycling components (intermodal elements) for future transportation planning.

The survey is interactive and can be taken online from April 20 to May 18, the date of the region's third annual Bike to Work Day. For those without Internet access, hard copies of the survey are available at area bicycle shops, libraries, or contact lkehoe@acogok.org.

Event Information

(Posted: April 20, 2007) The Association of Central Oklahoma Governments (ACOG), METRO Transit, Norman CART, the cities of Oklahoma City, Norman, Edmond, Guthrie, Yukon and regional bicycling advocates are helping to coordinate the third Bike to Work Day event for Central Oklahoma on Friday, May 18, 2007.

Central Oklahoma Bike to Work Day 2007 is part of a national campaign to promote bicycling as a healthy and efficient transportation alternative. The League of American Bicyclists has recognized the month of May as National Bike Month since 1956 and National Bike to Work Day annually offers metropolitan areas the opportunity to call attention to the benefits of bicycling and to increase safety awareness among bicyclists and motorists.

The Bike to Work event on May 18 will feature similar, but separate events in each city.  The responses from ACOG’s 2006 Bike to Work Survey showed that Central Oklahomans want more on-road, striped bikeways, safer roads, a completed regional recreational trail system, and would like to have a place to change and shower at work.  Check out the results from the 2006 survey here.

Details about the national campaign can be found online at www.bikemonth.com.

Safety Tips for Bicycle Commuting

1. Always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle.
2. Wear appropriate shoes and comfortable clothes in bright colors that enhance your visibility.
3. Before riding, inspect your bike for safety and mechanical concerns.
4. Plan and know your route by walking or driving it first. Select a route that uses less-traveled streets and avoids busy roads and intersections.
5. Share the commute with a co-worker or friend.
6. Obey ALL traffic laws—stop signs, traffic lights, and other posted signs. Signal turns, lane changes, and stops.
7. Continuously scan for traffic, look for road hazards, and ride in a predictable manner with the flow of traffic.
8. Ride with the flow of traffic as far to the right as practicable unless passing or turning.
9. Be aware of turning automobiles, buses making frequent stops, passengers exiting parked vehicles, vehicles exiting driveways, and pedestrians.
10. Carry drinking water, emergency maintenance tools, and a mobile phone.

Rain or Shine

Sudden thunderstorms occur often across Central Oklahoma in the spring. The Bike to Work event is a rain or shine event. In case of heavy rain, ride leaders will be responsible for calling a weather delay of 10-15 minutes for the rain to pass. Please take the necessary precautions if there is an electrical storm.
A few tips about lightning...

  • Do NOT seek shelter under tall isolated trees! The tree may help you stay dry but will significantly increase your risk of being struck by lightning. Rain will not kill you, but the lightning can!
  • Do NOT seek shelter under partially enclosed buildings
  • Stay away from tall, isolated objects. Lightning typically strikes the tallest object. That may be you in an open field or clearing.
  • Know the weather forecast. If there is a high chance of thunderstorms, think twice about riding your bike.
