9-1-1 Geographical Services
Geographical Information Services (GIS), or mapping services provide another tool used by 9-1-1 call-takers to locate 9-1-1 callers in their time of need. 9-1-1 ACOG collaborates with communities in Central Oklahoma to ensure map data is updated regularly so that the most current information is available to process 9-1-1 calls.
The regional GIS data set is designed to be both highly accurate and dynamically updated to ensure that current information is available to 9-1-1 call-takers. In order to facilitate this, ACOG, with the help of our vendor, GeoComm, has designed a maintenance process that attempts to minimize duplication of work being done by our members, while ensuring that the same level of data is avilable to the other communities that do not have the resources. The "win" for everyone in the process is have GIS data of the entire region that meets a minimum standard.
To do their part in updating the 9-1-1 database, each city and town notifies ACOG of any modification, change or new street in their community. This is accomplished through the Master Street Address Guide. The MSAG lists every street in each community in the region. The MSAG is utilized by the 9-1-1 system to route a 9-1-1 call to the most appropriate 9-1-1 center based upon the location of the 9-1-1 caller. It also indicates the assigned police, fire and medical responders for that location.
PSAP Updates
9-1-1 ACOG updates map data at each of the 22 9-1-1 ACOG Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) each month. This update is usually performed the third week of each month. This process is done remotely utilizing the 9-1-1 wide area network (WAN).
Public Access
The geographical information developed by ACOG was created utilizing public funds; and in accordance with the Oklahoma Open Records Act, ACOG makes this data available to the public. In order to faciliate this, ACOG has partnered with the University of Oklahoma's Center for Spatial Analysis to allow for easy public access to the regional geographical mapping data. This publicly accessible web portal allows the public, as well as those communities that do not have GIS capability to access the data in an easy to use format.
