Climate Divisions: Climate divisions are areas, usually groups of whole counties, which display fairly similar climate behavior. Oklahoma's nine climate divisions are based on U.S. Dept of Agriculture crop reporting districts, and bear the same names and areas as the USDA districts. A map of climate divisions is available from OCS down below. *The Central (Oklahoma) Climate Division includes: Canadian, Cleveland, Creek, Grady, Kingfisher, Lincoln, Logan, McClain, Okfuskee, Oklahoma, Payne, Pottawatomie and Seminole counties.
Total Rainfall: The amount of precipitation observed during the period, averaged over the entire climate division (Central Oklahoma). Each climate division is equipped with several Mesonet stations distributed fairly evenly within the division. If a station is missing a daily precipitation observation, the value for that day is estimated by using values from neighboring stations. Measurements are reported in inches.
Departure from Normal: The amount, in inches, above or below the climate division's established normal precipitation for the period. This value is often referred to as the precipitation surplus (when above normal) or deficit (when below normal). Normals are based on 30-year averages and are updated every ten years for each climate division. The current normals are based on 1971-2000 values.
Percentage of Normal: A measure of the precipitation surplus/deficit, given as a percent of the normal value. Amounts below 100% indicate precipitation deficits and amounts above 100% indicate precipitation surpluses. For example, 50% indicates a precipitation total that is one-half the normal value for the period.
Driest Since: This column displays the last period and accumulated amount with precipitation totals less than or equal to the period of interest. Only those time periods that correspond directly to the period of interest are surveyed (for example, 30-day rainfall ending March 21st, 2003 are only compared to 30-day periods that ended on March 21st).
Rank Since: This value indicates the historical rank of the period of interest among analogous periods in the climate division's history. For example, a 60-day precip value ending on March 21st, 2003 may rank as "23rd driest of 83 periods on record". This means that the 2003 rainfall total was compared to 82 other 60-day periods that ended on March 21st and was 23rd smallest value of the group. Ties are indicated by a "t-" preceding the rank.
