ACOG Honors the Retirement of Longtime Water Resources Director John Harrington, P.G.
The Association of Central Oklahoma Governments (ACOG) is proud to honor John Harrington, P.G., who is retiring on June 30, after an exemplary 37-year career devoted to the protection, planning, and management of water resources across the Central Oklahoma region.
Since joining ACOG in 1988, Harrington has served as the organization’s Water Resources Director, leading numerous regional efforts to assess and plan for the long-term sustainability of surface and groundwater systems. His role encompassed evaluating the groundwater conditions of the Garber-Wellington Aquifer, producing detailed technical reports for state and federal agencies, and conducting advanced hydrological modeling and water studies to benefit the ACOG region cities and counties.
“John’s work has been foundational to the ACOG mission of fostering sound water policy and protecting one of our region’s most critical natural resources,” said ACOG Executive Director Mark W. Sweeney. “His legacy is one of deep technical expertise, thoughtful leadership, and an unwavering commitment to public service.”
In addition to his analytical and advisory duties, Harrington played a pivotal role in supporting the Garber-Wellington Association Policy Committee, where he offered policy guidance to local officials and facilitated regional cooperation on complex water issues. He also frequently engaged with the public to help educate citizens and elected leaders about the importance of water sustainability.
John Harrington’s contributions to Central Oklahoma’s water infrastructure and planning will resonate for years to come, and ACOG extends its heartfelt thanks and best wishes as he embarks on a well-deserved retirement.
