Celebrating Public Safety Telecommunicators: Preparing for the Future with NG911

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (April 13–19) is a time to honor the dedicated professionals who are the first point of contact in an emergency—your 911 call takers and dispatchers. These behind-the-scenes heroes are the calm voices in moments of chaos, helping to save lives every single day.

At 911 ACOG, we not only celebrate their service—we’re also working to ensure they’re prepared for the future of emergency communications through cutting-edge technology and training.

What is NG911?

Next Generation 911 (NG911) is a major leap forward in how emergency services operate. Unlike traditional analog systems, NG911 uses modern digital infrastructure to improve how emergency calls are received, routed, and managed.

NG911 will allow telecommunicators to:

  • Receive real-time text messages from callers

  • Get more accurate caller location data

  • Use faster, more resilient networks during natural disasters or outages

  • Share data seamlessly with other public safety agencies

For the residents of the 911 ACOG Service Area, this means faster, smarter, and more reliable 911 response—and ACOG is proud to be leading this transformation that will be fully implemented by the end of 2025.

Training the First, First Responders

While NG911 improves technology, its success depends on the people behind the headsets—your 911 telecommunicators. That’s where the 911 Institute for Oklahoma, housed at ACOG, plays a critical role.

The Institute provides ongoing professional development and certification for public safety telecommunicators, including:

  • Training on NG911 systems and software

  • Courses in stress management, crisis response, and leadership

  • Continuing education to keep up with evolving emergency trends

Through this training, dispatchers are better equipped to navigate the challenges of modern emergency response and utilize the full potential of NG911 technology.

Honoring the Voices Behind the Call

This week, we invite you to join us in thanking the individuals who answer the call—literally. Whether they’re providing CPR instructions over the phone, coordinating multi-agency responses, or staying calm in the midst of chaos, your 911 professionals are essential to community safety.

At ACOG, we’re committed to supporting them—not just this week, but every day—by investing in the technology and training that keeps our region prepared and protected.
